During the final piece of last evenings Jazz Fest Concert FHS Music Director Steve Massey invited retiring music teacher George Murphy onto the stage to perform with the students.
This was an opportunity for the Jazz Ensemble to jam with George in his 30th and final Jazz Fest Concert.
“We’ve been fortunate to have a great Jazz Band for well over 30 years. There’s lots of reasons for it, but one of the reasons the students succeed is they start in the middle school with Mr. Murphy, as you heard earlier and then most of them continue to study the trombone with Mr. Murphy to this day. So the trombones aren’t an accident in other words…they’re taught by a master teacher.”
Saxophone teacher Ken Reid and Jazz Fest featured guest Dino Govoni also joined the band on stage for an extended jam session style performance of Blues for the Uncommon Kids.

Hi George. I hope this comment finds you well. If you are the George Murphy I met In Florida in 1977. You were a band member of Mike Christie and Daybreak….a fabulous ensemble of very talented musicians! Good times.
George Murphy fellow Berklee boy, bass player Mike Brosman ( Daybreak 1975-77 ). I hope this finds you as I tried to find you 2 years ago when I was visiting Boston. Only found Joe Pilsifer..
Are you the Mike Christie of the band Mike Christie and Daybreak? I have been trying to find George Murphy to say hello. I first met the band in a nightclub in Florida in ’77 I believe. If you are this Mike, just like to say the band was amazing. The best to you and should you communicate with george say hello for me.
