Refrigerator Recycling Program

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is partnering with NSTAR Electric and Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) to offer DCR MassParks Passes to the first 100 customers who participate in the utilities’ refrigerator recycling program between May 1 and May 31, 2014. Any NSTAR and WMECo customers who recycle their old fridge or freezer will also receive a $50 rebate and free unit pick up.

“DCR is always working with innovative partners to advance our mission to protect, promote and enhance our natural, cultural and recreational resources for everyone,” said DCR Commissioner Jack Murray. “We’re excited to partner with NSTAR and WMECo, as well as encourage folks to save energy, reduce waste at home, and spend time in our parks.”

“Recycling old refrigerators and freezers that consume as much as four times more energy than newer, efficient models will help preserve the environment for generations to come,” said Tilak Subrahmanian, Vice President of Energy Efficiency for Northeast Utilities, parent company of NSTAR and WMECo. “We hope our unique partnership with Massachusetts DCR will give our customers incentive to send their old refrigerators and freezers on a ‘hike’ by having them properly recycled.”

To qualify for NSTAR Electric and WMECo’s refrigerator recycling program, refrigerators and freezers must be clean, empty and in working order with an inside measurement of between 10 and 30 cubic feet, standard for most units. Customers can call 1-877-545-4113 or NSTAR customers can visitRetireYourFridge.com and WMECo customers can visit WMECoFridgeRecycle.com to learn more about the program and to schedule free pick up.

The MassParks Pass grants holders unlimited day-use parking at Massachusetts state parks, pools and beaches where parking fees are charged, with the exception of Quabbin Reservoir fishing areas.
