NASA Shuttle Mission Overview
The space shuttle is heading to theÂ International Space Station on its final mission,Â it will be taking with it two key components â€“Â the Italian-built Permanent MultipurposeÂ Module (PMM) and Express Logistics Carrier 4 (ELC4) â€“ that will provide spare parts andÂ storage capacity to the orbiting complex.
Discovery also will deliver Robonaut 2, whichÂ will become the first humanoid robot in space. Â The 39th flight of NASAâ€™s most flown shuttle isÂ scheduled to last 11 days, beginning atÂ 4:50 p.m. EST on Thursday, Feb. 24. TheÂ flight is designated Utilization and LogisticsÂ Flight 5 (ULF5) in the assembly sequence ofÂ the space station.
The commander for Discoveryâ€™s final flight Â is veteran astronaut Steve Lindsey (Col., Â USAF, Retired). Â He will be joined by Â Pilot Eric Boe (Col., USAF) and MissionÂ Specialists Steve Bowen (Capt., U.S. Navy), Â Dr. Michael Barratt, Nicole Stott and Â Alvin Drew (Col., USAF Retired).
Discovery will spend two days heading towardÂ its rendezvous with the International SpaceÂ Station. Â On the second day of the flight, theÂ crew will perform the standard scan of theÂ shuttleâ€™s thermal protection system using theÂ orbiter boom sensor system attached to the endÂ of Discoveryâ€™s robotic arm. Â While theÂ inspection is underway, Bowen, Drew and StottÂ will work on preparing the spacesuits onboardÂ the shuttle that will be transferred to the stationÂ after docking and will be used during theÂ missionâ€™s two spacewalks.
