After almost 10 years its coming back, billed as the non-traditional Nutcracker. This version has all the charm and magic of the original including the original Tchaikovsky score but adding an additional element tap dancing. First performed in 1996 as a summer workshop, the show was so popular that it again made a return in December of 1996 for additional performances and played at Steps off Broadway until 2003. After much discussion by the staff and directors of STEPS it is making its triumphant return to the stage.

“What makes this version different from the rest is obvious” says STEPS Artistic Director Keith Mottola. “NOISE, the addition of the tapping adds another element to an otherwise flawless score.” With assistance from STEPS Director of dance, Arlena Boyle who herself has been involved since the beginning. These two powerhouses of tap have created and staged an incredible evening of charm, magic, and entertainment. With the diverse ages of the cast, it is always a challenge to create an evening of entertainment utilizing the skills and performance levels but STEPS has once again managed to produce a high level show which is sure to once again become a holiday tradition.

Mottola and Boyle will share the coveted roles of The Nutcracker Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy with 2 former students Nicole Brunelle who in her younger years played Clara and Michael Skrzek a former student of Joanne Warren Studio in Worcester and now a performing Arts major at the HART School in Conn. “I am very excited to pass on these roles to our younger performers. Arlena and I have spent years technically visiting and revisiting these roles to create what we think is a perfect and seamless transition from the ballet performance to the tap.” adds Mottola. With a cast of almost 60, including entire families (a tradition that has been ongoing), Steps Off Broadway will once again play host to the newest and coolest way to see the Nutcracker

This is a wonderful way to start your holiday season. This is the year to begin a new family tradition. Come see what all the “noise” is all about! You will be amazed by the unbelievable local talent. This is one show you do not want to miss!
